HWiNFO (Hardware Info) is a comprehensive hardware monitoring application that provides detailed information about your PC components and real-time sensor data. It's the go-to tool for diagnosing performance issues because it can track:
Temperatures
CPU, GPU, VRM, SSD temps in real-time
Power & Voltage
Power draw, voltage drops, throttling
Usage & Clocks
CPU/GPU usage, clock speeds, memory
Frame Metrics
FPS, frame time, 1% lows
Why Use HWiNFO for Gaming Issues?
- Find the Root Cause: Instead of guessing, see exactly what's happening when stutters occur
- Detect Thermal Throttling: Know when your CPU/GPU is slowing down due to heat
- Identify Bottlenecks: See if CPU, GPU, RAM, or storage is limiting performance
- Track Power Limits: Detect when your GPU hits power limits and throttles
- Monitor Memory: Check RAM and VRAM usage for potential issues
- Record Evidence: Create logs to share or analyze later
Quick Start Guide
Step 1: Download HWiNFO
- Go to hwinfo.com/download
- Download the portable or installer version (both work)
- Run HWiNFO64.exe (use 64-bit version)
Step 2: Configure for Gaming
- Select "Sensors-only" mode when starting
- Right-click any sensor → Settings
- Enable: Show Values in Tray, Minimize to Tray
Step 3: Start Logging
- Click the 📝 button (or Tools → Sensor Logging)
- Choose a save location for your CSV file
- Set logging interval to 500ms or 1000ms
- Click Start
Step 4: Play & Capture
- Start your game and play normally
- When you experience stuttering, note the time
- Play for 5-15 minutes to capture good data
- Exit game and stop logging in HWiNFO
Key Metrics to Watch
Thermal Throttling Indicators
- CPU Package Temp > 90°C
- GPU Temperature > 85°C
- "Thermal Throttling" flag = Yes
- Clock speeds dropping during load
Power Limit Indicators
- "Power Limit" flag = Yes
- GPU Power dropping below TDP
- Sudden clock speed drops
- Voltage instability
Memory Issues
- RAM usage > 90%
- VRAM usage near maximum
- Page file activity spikes
- Memory controller load high
Healthy System
- Stable temperatures under 80°C
- No throttling flags
- Stable clock speeds
- RAM/VRAM with headroom
